(This site includes affiliate links – if you buy through my link I may get paid a commission but the price remains the same for you. Thank you for your support.)

What exactly is a niche?

The definition of a niche is ‘denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population’ which sums it up pretty well. It could also be described as a market segment or audience.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche which is great news for you as it is highly likely that you already have an interest that would be a fit!

What lights your fire?

What are you passionate about? What could you talk about endlessly and never get tired of? There is a very good chance that this will be your niche!

One of the key components in Affiliate Marketing is creating content on a very regular basis. As part of the purpose of getting into this business is to do something you love, this is pretty important.

Don’t worry if you are not an expert on the subject. Part of the joy will be the discoveries you will make, and the opportunity to take your followers on a journey with you.

However, there are people who have been very successful in niches that they really don’t know much about but knew they were profitable and set about becoming an expert in that area.

If you really are not passionate about anything, what could you become passionate about? Maybe you could get passionate about the ‘work from home’ niche.

As you will be learning all the steps to become successful on your Affiliate Marketing journey, you could easily document all you have learned in an engaging way and that could be your niche!

And at the same time, you would be deepening what you had just learned so it would be a win/win.

What are some pitfalls to avoid?

There are a number of things that you should keep in mind when choosing your niche. One is the question of how popular your niche is – if it is something very elitist, you may not be able to drive the volume of traffic to your website.

If it is something that is free to enjoy (e.g. walking) you are unlikely to generate much revenue in sales (though could do okay with advertising potentially).

Also, steer away from anything that is a trend as you don’t want to spend a year creating a profitable website for that traffic just to stop.

Your ideal niche is ‘evergreen’. For example, parenting and pets will never go out of fashion.

Examples of profitable niches

These are just some examples of profitable niches. The challenge is to find one that is profitable but not so competitive that you can’t rank for it.

1. Health and Wellness – This is a massive niche both in scope to earn and possible subjects. While some people would say it is overcrowded, it just shows what a colossal demand there is for information and help in this niche.

What you will want to do is to drill down to something that will relate to a segment of that audience.

It could be staying fit during pregnancy, losing weight over 50 (or 60 or 70) for women (or men), losing weight after having a baby, staying fit with a disability, ways to relieve back pain, plant-based diets, keto diets, etc., living to 100+ and more.

2. Make Money from Home – Again, this is a huge niche and it is likely to receive even higher interest in the current climate where people are looking for opportunities to boost their income.

There are many potential avenues within this such as Forex or stock trading, MLM advice, how to start a blog, how to make money online after retirement, how to become a virtual assistant, and so on.

3. Relationships – You would focus on a particular segment again, which could be finding love the second time around, finding love as a single parent, how to recover from divorce, how to find love over 50.

4. Hobby niches – If you have a popular hobby, there is no reason at all why you can’t make that your niche (unless it is a hobby where people don’t tend to buy anything!).

One of the most popular niches is woodworking. Who would have thought it! But also all sorts of arts and crafts, gardening, growing veg at home etc. Things like basketball and other team sports are big and many, many more.

5. Gaming – This seems to be huge! If you are into this, it would be great to produce reviews of the latest games, strategies for improving your level etc.

The number of gamers is rising and there are new games constantly being released to give you a steady stream of topics to write about.

6. Pets – People are obsessed with their pets and will spend a never-ending amount of money if they are convinced it will be good for their well-being.

You could focus on dog agility, what to feed dogs who are fussy eaters, the best diets for small dogs and you could review all sorts of products.

Let’s not forget cats too and things like keeping your elderly cat in the best condition or oriental breeds, or caring for cats with health issues.

If you are an equestrian you could concentrate on stud management, showjumping schooling tips for youngsters, keeping an older horse sound, nutrition for the sports horse, and so on. Other popular pets where people spend are happy to spend money could also be a consideration.

7. Babies – People having a baby, especially a first baby, want to know everything you could possibly know about babies, how to care for them and what they need.

A good niche could be all about what you need for a first baby, or you could focus on transporting babies, early years learning 0 – 2 years, baby clothing, nurseries etc.

This is just a very small sample of niches within niches and just scratching the surface. The important thing is that people are already spending money in these areas and you can carve out a chunk for yourself too.

What sort of content will you create?

A key point to remember is that followers will search you out if you are helping them to solve a problem so while you want to get into a profitable niche, your focus must be on service. How can you best help the visitors to your site?

You will be able to use keyword research tools to find what people are searching for and base your posts around those, but it is good also sometimes just to create a post because you know it is a particular issue with the group of people that you are targeting.

Google rates quality content above everything else. You can then link it to other popular related posts on your site.

If you have a niche where you can create regular product or service reviews, this is a great benefit.

Most people search for reviews before buying anything and are often at this stage when they will land on your site meaning that you will get the commission if they click your link and make a purchase.

How to find an affiliate marketing niche

Here is an example of a great selling product. I know it’s a great selling product because of the ‘Gravity’ score of 816 which means that 816 different affiliates have sold that product in the last 12 weeks. That is an exceptionally high score I have to say. Their Health and Fitness products seem to sell more than most but that doesn’t mean you have to opt for that niche.

It’s also worth mentioning that digital products tend to pay a higher percentage commission so that is worth bearing in mind.

Having said all that, don’t get hung up on just using Clickbank. And make sure that the products genuinely offer a solution to the problem that your audience has. Some of them are very tacky with poor sales pages. For more ideas of how to find great affiliate programs, check out my post THE Best Tips For Finding Great Affiliate Programs in 2021
