How To Sell MLM – Without Being Annoying

So, you have just got started with your new business and you are so excited, you want to share it with everyone you meet! Good for you! You took action and decided to make something happen in your life.

But the people you thought would support you and at least try your product don’t want to know. Fear not! In this post, you will learn how to sell MLM – without being annoying.

What to do about lack of support from friends and family

You might be in the fortunate positions that your friends and family do want to support you and try your products or you might be in the camp where the people you were counting on either aren’t interested or, worse still, think that you have joined some sort of cult and try to talk you out of it or treat it like it’s some sort of joke.

Don’t worry if this happens and don’t try to persuade people to see things your way. Just tell them you have made your decision and you are going to make it work.

The good news is that although the people you thought would be interested quite possibly aren’t, the people you thought would absolutely not be interested quite often are! And you will not just be relying on people you know.

Where do you promote your products?

There are many ways to promote your business but the best way I have witnessed hands-down is with a Blog. I was in MLM for 10 years and interestingly I only saw one person do this.

That one person had single-handedly retailed well over $1m of products! Yes, it had taken a good number of years to achieve that but do you think he was selling significantly more than the people dropping catalogs (for the same business) door to door or posting the same products on Facebook? I think so! He is still one of the key leaders in that business today.

Why was this approach so successful? Very simply, when you have a blog you use search terms that people are looking for online. Instead of being the one chasing people around to see if they want to know about your latest foundation (or whatever), they are searching for you! Can you imagine the difference?

How do you start a blog?

Before you do anything else, consider who your audience is and what their pain points are.

Essentially you want to find the biggest problems your audience has and solve them better than the competition. Focus on this one thing and you will make money.

The reason I wanted you to take this step before creating a website is that it is hugely helpful to know exactly the direction you are going to go in before picking a domain name.

You will also need web hosting – I go into all the ins and out of starting a blog on my post Making Money Blogging for Beginners.

What will you write about?

Take a look at the products your business produces and what problems they solve. There are so many really excellent MLM products out there now. Just as an example, let’s look at doTerra who have risen to fame quickly with their essential oils and associated products.

They produce oils for many conditions, mental and physical that people suffer from. In this case, my recommendation would be to start with mental ailments – for example, you could write posts about anxiety and among the helpful solutions, including the oils and some testimonials.

You could do the same for other mental conditions and in the long term consider branching out to physical conditions but the more you can closely identify with a particular niche, the better the response you will get.

Maybe you have a weight-loss product in which case you would do well to narrow down your audience again. You could target women who have just given birth or women (or men) over 50 for example.

You can give all sorts of fitness tips and if you find other related products that would be a fit for your blog, you could even add to your offering, earn extra money from those sales and increase your credibility as you are looking at the bigger picture of what can help your particular followers.

Can I use a blog for sponsoring too?

Of course. You can have a section for people who want to find out more about your opportunity or you could have a separate website to target people who are interested in working from home. There is lots of scope for the topics you could write about.

Shouldn’t I use Social Media?

Absolutely! Your team will most likely have a system for posting on social media but do use it to promote your content. Every time you publish a blog post, share it to your Facebook group or whatever social media you are using.

There are a few dos and don’ts that will help you to stay on good terms with everyone:

Do:

  • Invite friends to your Facebook group
  • Post helpful content – remember you are solving problems
  • Don’t get into arguments if someone doesn’t like what you are doing!
  • Investigate Pinterest – it is really a search engine rather than social media. How many followers you have is irrelevant.

Don’t

  • Add people to a Facebook group without their permission
  • Send a group message to them promoting your business or product unless they have expressly agreed
  • The same with WhatsApp
  • Send endless messages to friends about your opportunity (one will do!)
  • Post lots of products in Facebook groups. This used to be a thing but will generally get your account blocked.
  • Be offended if people aren’t interested – move on to someone who is.

Conclusion

There are so many people promoting the same products on social media, you need to find a way to stand out from the crowd while keeping good relationships with your nearest and dearest. A blog is a great way to do this and it’s fun!

The only downside potentially could be that one of the top metrics for success with MLM is how easy a system is to duplicate. Unless the people you sponsor into the business share your interest in retailing by blogging, it is not the ideal system to duplicate. However, if you were able to retail $1m of the product without a team you would still be onto a winner!

After 10 years in MLM, I made the decision to move on to Affiliate Marketing. I will always be grateful for my involvement in MLM for what it taught me and for the wonderful people I met.

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to sponsor people quicker than they left to build a big enough business to make it worthwhile! To check out the system I used to learn all the ins and outs of Affiliate Marketing, click here.

  1. Thank you so much for this post. I know MLMs can be annoying especially for the people you are trying to recruit. The tips you gave can really make things better both for you and the people you are trying to sell to. Personally I prefer affiliate marketing. It gives you much more freedom and it is truly passive once you set everything up.

    • Thanks for your kind comments. I think people are so down on MLM because so many people have gone about it the wrong way. It’s a great business model but I’m with you – it’s affiliate marketing for me now as I’m not relying on anyone elses performance for my success. x
